A time server is used to distribute a correct time base in a data network as synchronously as possible. The NTP (Network Time Protocol) was developed for this purpose. It is defined in several RFCs: RFC1305, RFC1589, RFC2030.

Time servers are arranged hierarchically. Time servers with a 'stratum' of 1 are servers with direct access to a standard time (e.g. from the Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, PTB).
