Position CRC1644/B12 – PhD student Nowak group

The successful candidate will work 26 hours per week (65%), employed at the University of Potsdam. The position is classified within remuneration group 13 of the collective wage agreement among the German states (TV-L). The earliest possible starting date is 1 April 2024 and the position is limited until 31 December 2027. The fixed term of employment is in accordance with Section 2 subsection 1 of the German Act on Limited Scientific Contracts (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz or WissZeitVG).

Your field of work:

We are actively looking for dynamic and driven individuals to join our research team as Ph.D. students in the interdisciplinary realm of plant molecular biology, plasticity, and computational image analysis. Ideal candidates should possess a strong background in plant molecular biology, as well as proficiency or a strong inclination toward computational image analysis methods and tools. Your responsibilities:

  • employ both wet lab techniques and computational approaches
  • develop an automated image processing pipeline to quantify root hair traits
  • measure the extend of genetic correlations between the plasticity of different phenotypic traits

Results from your work on this project should form the basis for your doctorate/PhD.

Candidates who are interested in working in the Nowak lab can apply with proof of excellent grades in bioinformatics or computer science. Prior specialization in plant sciences is helpful, but not required. Practical knowledge in any of the following areas is desirable:

  • computer-aided image analysis and automatic quantification, e.g. with ImageJ/Fiji
  • Programming skills in Matlab, R, Python, or other languages
