Assess soil carbon pool dynamics

  1. Assessment of soil carbon: The carbon pools of aboveground biomass, dead wood, forest floor (litter), soil organic matter, soil black carbon and if possible belowground biomass (IPCC 2003) will be assessed on established observation plots. This will enable GHG (notably CO2) emissions and fixation to be determined. Soils will be sampled in 10 cm-depth intervals up to a depth of 100 cm and analysed in the lab. The proportion of fine soil will be determined as the weight of the soil passing through the 2 mm mesh divided by the total weight of the soil sample (Dayamba et al. 2016). The soil carbon stock and its fractions will be determined using the equations as specified in Aynekulu (2003) and then converted to the conventional expression in mass per area (Mg C ha-1 ).
