Volcanoes, Viruses and Volatiles – Very Big Questions at the Doctoral Seminar

A record-breaking 18 doctoral candidates presented their research at the Institute of Geosciences Doctoral Seminar at the end of this semester – a reflection of this fun semesterly event, and the healthy and vibrant community of young geoscientists across UP, AWI, GFZ, and more.

This semester, participants could benefit from the informative presentation of Prof. Dr. Jens Tronicke (deputy chairman of the doctoral committee in the Faculty of Science), who summarised the basic information on the doctoral examination process at the Faculty. An afternoon of topic presentations ranging from climate, carbon, andcrateroutgassing, to mantlemelts, mountainbuilding and  more followed. We rounded off the event with two lively sessions of poster discussion, cookies and coffee.

Presenting at the Doctoral Seminar is an enriching core component of a  Geoscience Doctorate. Participation is mandatory once, but presenters are sincerely welcome to take part several times! It is especially recommended to present early in the doctoral studies, for the supportive community feedback, and the wider network of geoscience doctoral candidates in Potsdam one can gain. We also always warmly welcome non-presenters to support their colleagues by attending the doctoral seminar.

The doctoral seminar is a long-standing bi-annual feature of the institute`s calendar, and is consistently made possible by a team of dedicated doctoral candidates spanning the Institute of Geosciences itself and other Potsdam research institutes such as the GFZ. This voluntary position, typically filled on a rolling 2 – 3 semester basis, promises many skill benefits and lasting connections with other researchers.
