Lecture: Complexity Science

M.Sc. Lecture Course: Complexity Science

Summer Term – Start 7 April 2025

Complexity science is an interdisciplinary science that stands on the shoulders of statistical physics, mathematical statistics, information theory, and networks. Complexity science studies phenomena as diverse as the behavior of honeybees, the economic markets, the human brain, and the climate, but also the structure of the universe and the learning behaviour of artificial neural networks.

This lecture course gives an introduction to the conceptual foundations of complexity and complex systems. It covers basics of statistical physics and phase transitions, of Shannon’s information theory, and of complex networks. The mathematical background is always linked to applications and examples from current research literature. The course is accompanied by homework problems, and coding and data analysis tutorials.
