That language learners make mistakes does not come as a surprise. Nevertheless, at least at an intermediary stage of learning, they still manage to communicate more or less successfully.
How do they actually deal with a lack of language proficiency at that stage? What (other) interactional skills do they have? How are those skills to be assessed, particularly in an institutional context? And how can interactional competence be developed through, e.g., instruction?
