The Barbara
What is Barbara?
Barbara is the patron saint of miners and geoscientists.
In her honor, we celebrate our big Barbara celebration every year at the beginning of December, to which all students, teachers, and people employed at the institute are invited. Guests are also welcome, of course.
In addition to speeches by students and teachers, there will be short performances, and our institute band (Babsi Band) will provide entertainment with songs such as “Amphibol.”
Barbara is the central celebration for our institute. Every year, we come up with a new motto, which is decided by democratic majority vote. So on Barbara Day, you are welcome to come in your own creative costumes.
In the weeks leading up to Barbara Day, there are many preparations to be made. For example, there is the Erstibasteln, to which all first-semester students, but of course also students from higher semesters, are invited. Here we do crafts to decorate our institute for Barbara Day in a way that fits the motto. It's always a lot of fun, and there's always mulled wine at this time of year.
The third-semester students also traditionally perform a play.
As you can see, there is a lot to do and we are always grateful for helping hands! That's how Barbara's Day can be a success.
The mottos of recent years were:
- Jurassic Park 2024
- Pyrites of the Caribbean 2023
- Stone Wars 2021 (Abgesagt, verschoben auf 2022)
- Disthenland (Disneyland) 2020
- Herr der Ringsilikate (Herr der Ringe) 2019
- Harry Schotter (Harry Potter) 2018
- Pyrites of the Carribean (Fluch der Karibik) 2017
