Description of the program:

In the first year of study, students first receive a basic introduction to the natural sciences—mathematics, physics, and chemistry. In addition, the module Geosciences I takes place in the first semester, providing an overview of the Earth system, as well as the module Mineral and Rock Identification. In the second semester, the module Geosciences IIfollows, in which geological processes are examined in more detail. All geoscientific knowledge acquired is then deepened during two field excursions (Harz Mountains, southern France) in the summer.

In the second year of study, the modules Geosciences III and IV cover sedimentary systems and stratigraphic processes, and students learn to work with GIS, a program used, among other things, to create maps and geological profiles. Furthermore, the modules Geophysics and Materials of the Earth (mineralogy and geochemistry) build on the knowledge from the first year. Students also learn how to work with geoscientific data and how to present it.

In the final year, students can choose advanced modules from the fields of geology, mineralogy, and geophysics according to their interests. An internship is also required.

In addition, during the course of study students have the opportunity to take four different elective modules, such as zoology, an introduction to astronomy, fundamentals of programming, soil science, or a foreign language.

field trips

There are several compulsory excursions during the course. To give you an overview of the costs you can expect, here is a list of the most important compulsory excursions in the bachelor's program:
Important: this is only an approximate list; the exact costs vary slightly each year.

Semester 2:

  • Harz: 6 days camping, ~€180 + self-catering, part of the Introduction to Geosciences 2 module
  • Southern France: 11 days in a youth hostel, €500 + €200 cash for meals, part of the Introduction to Geosciences 2 module

Semester 4:

  • Spain: 6 days in an apartment, ~€400 + self-catering, part of the Introduction to Earth Sciences 4 module.
  • Fichtelgebirge: 4 days camping, ~€300 (previously €150) (breakfast included, otherwise self-catering), part of the Earth Materials 2 module.

There are additional excursions in the higher semesters. However, these are part of the various specialization modules that you must choose between.

Fichtelgebirge with O'Brien - €160

The Digital Geography blog posts several times a week on relevant topics in the fields of geodata, mapping, GIS, statistics, and more. As the digitization of geography degree programs continues to grow, the site aims to be a go-to source for free and comprehensive information on new topics in geographic information systems.

Also interesting: every Friday, they post new jobs and internships for geography students online.
