Presenting in an Academic Context: Doctoral Students at the University of Cagliari Strengthen Their Skills at Zessko
The university alliance European Digital UniverCity (EDUC) creates a space of higher education in which students, staff, teaching staff, and researchers from the partner universities can work together. The eight partner universities include the University of Potsdam and the Universität Cagliari (UNICA).
Online or hybrid courses allow students from all partner universities to participate in advertised courses. In the 2023 summer semester, Dr. Prickett opened his hybrid course “Memorable Speaking: Making an Impact (Hörverstehen und mündlicher Ausdruck II),” which he conducts together with Karen Abel (Beit Berl College, Israel) for students of the EDUC partner universities, and doctoral students at the University of Cagliari took advantage of this learning opportunity.
The doctoral students agreed that the course not only provided them with important presentation techniques but also sensitized them to culture-dependent differences in scientific presentations. Arianna Carredu reported, for example, that the approach differs between American presenters and those from Europe. The doctoral students could gain knowledge about which skills are particularly important when presenting in an English-speaking academic context and were equipped with methods to improve their own skills in this regard. They particularly emphasized the helpful tips they received, which were illustrated, for example, in videos, and that they benefited greatly from Dr. Prickett’s experience.
The students highly recommend this course to students in the EDUC university alliance.

Presentare in modo scientifico: dottorandi dell’Università di Cagliari rafforzano le loro competenze allo Zessko (“Centro linguistico di ateneo e apprendimento competenze chiave”)
Il progetto “European Digital UniverCity (EDUC)“ ha come obiettivo la creazione di uno spazio universitario europeo nel quale studenti, staff, ricercatori e docenti delle università associate possono lavorare insieme. Tra le otto università associate ci sono l’Università di Potsdam e l’Università di Cagliari (UNICA).
La partecipazione ai corsi EDUC è accessibile a tutti gli studenti delle università associate grazie a corsi online e ibridi. Nel semestre estivo 2023 il Dr. Prickett, in collaborazione con la collega Karen Abel (Beit Berl College, Israele), ha aperto a EDUC il corso ibrido “Memorable Speaking: Making an Impact (Hörverstehen und mündlicher Ausdruck II)””. Alcuni dottorandi dell’Università di Cagliari hanno colto questa opportunità.
Tutti i partecipanti si sono trovati d’accordo nell’affermare che il corso non solo ha insegnato loro fondamentali tecniche di presentazione, ma li ha anche resi consapevoli delle differenze culturali nelle presentazioni scientifiche. Arianna Careddu, per esempio, ha fatto notare la differenza di approccio tra oratori statunitensi ed europei. I dottorandi hanno acquisito conoscenze su quali abilità sono particolarmente importanti quando si presenta in contesto scientifico anglofono e hanno appreso metodi con i quali possono sviluppare ulteriormente le loro competenze in tale contesto. In particolare hanno apprezzato i consigli utili, supportati da video esplicativi, e si sono mostrati entusiasti di aver potuto approfittare dell’ esperienza del Dr. Prickett.
Gli studenti dell’Università di Cagliari raccomandano quindi vivamente la partecipazione al corso anche agli studenti di altre università del progetto EDUC.
