Project Description
The stay at the Institute of Romance Studies of the University of Potsdam is the first stage of a postdoctoral project that examines the construction of a trans-Pacific relationship between the emerging People's Republic of China and numerous Chilean intellectuals during the 1950s and 1960s. In the works of autors such as Mercedes Valdivieso (Los ojos de bambú), Efraín Barquero (El viento de los reinos) or Armando Uribe, but also in the cronicles of Olga Poblete, Luis Oyarzún, Francisco Coloane, Gonzalo Rojas or Pablo Neruda, the painter José Venturelli, as well as in newspaper documents (China Reconstruye), are traces of trans-Pacific relations between China and Chile. A wide variety of works from that period (essays, stories and poems) were inspired by this contact and thus contributed to the diversification of international relations during the Cold War.
