Welcome to the website of the Institute of Nutritional Science at the University of Potsdam!
The Institute of Nutritional Science at the University of Potsdam was established in 1994 as part of the Faculty of Science at the traditional Potsdam-Rehbrücke location. This site has a long-standing history of nutritional research—innovative research has been conducted here since as early as 1946. Today, the institute is based at both the Potsdam-Golm and Potsdam-Rehbrücke locations. Potsdam is now among the largest centers for nutrition research in Germany.
The institute's research follows scientifically grounded approaches to investigate nutrition- and health-related questions. The goal is to understand how nutrition influences biological and molecular processes in the body and in cells—both under conditions of homeostasis and during dysfunctions such as disease development or aging processes. This can help in developing new strategies for the prevention and treatment of nutrition-related diseases.
There is close cooperation with other Institutes within the Faculty of Science at the University of Potsdam, the Leibniz Institute "German Institute of Human Nutrition" (DIfE, Potsdam-Rehbrücke) as well as with the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR, Berlin). The institute currently hosts five regular professorships, one adjunct professorship, and one honorary professorship. In addition, there are six joint professorships with the DIfE and one adjunct professorship at the BfR.
The institute is responsible for the Bachelor's program in Nutritional Science. At the Master's level, it offers the Nutritional Science program as well as the international, English-language Master's program in Toxicology.
