The Bundeswehr as an operational army: What remains after 30 years of out-of-area missions?

Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine at the latest, national and alliance defence have once again been the focus for the German Bundeswehr. But behind the army lies an era that has now lasted 30 years: that of the "out-of-area missions", i.e. missions outside NATO territory, such as in Afghanistan. They have changed the Bundeswehr and continue to shape it today. Kilian Neuwert has met soldiers who have been on missions. He traces the development of the Bundeswehr into an operational army and explores the question: What remains? What can be learned? Is an era coming to an end because the Bundeswehr has to concentrate entirely on its original task as a defence army?
