RF Cognitive Sciences

The *3rd day of the Research Focus Cognitive Sciences* took place on October 25th 2019 . The aim was to intensify the exchange of all members of the RFCS, to get to know each other and to further identify interfaces in joint research.

Impressions of this productive day:

********** After the successful first five years the RF Cognitive Sciences enters its second funding phase: Start of the next funding phase with a ceremonial presentation of certificates on July 23rd 2019 (duration of funding phase until June 30th 2023)

 

********** The Leibniz-Lecture of the Leibnizkolleg Potsdam was organized together with the RFCS in 2019. We were proud to welcome Professor Willem van Mechelen, Department of Public and Occupational Health of the Amsterdam UMC.

********** The DFG Research Unit (DFG-FOR 2253) "Crossing the borders: The interplay of language, cognition, and the brain in early human development" has secured a second funding phase.

 

On December 6th, the DFG has approved the application for a second funding phase (3 more years).

Summer School "Limits of Variability in Language"

18. - 22. June 2018

The summer school was organized by the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre SFB 1287 “Limits of Variability in Language: Cognitive, Grammatical, and Social Aspects“. The school brought together leading international experts from different subfields of linguistics, covering the span from modern sociolinguistics, via dialect research, to grammar theory and the formal study of African languages.

Talk by Prof. Daniel L. Everett

Dan Everett gave a CRC guest lecture "On the Role of Culture in Language and Cognition" in Golm on 23.04.18. A second talk took place on 24.04.18 at Einstein Forum Potsdam. Prof. Gisbert Fanselow moderated throughout the event. More information and an abstract you can find here.

Opening of the new "Kubus" at Bildungsforum Potsdam

The opening of the new "Kubus" with the topic "future of work" within the exhibition FORSCHUNGSFENSTER, located at the Bildungsforum Potsdam took place on April 13th 2018. Contribution of the RFCS by Dr. Sebastian Stober: Interactive simulation on the question "How does artificial intelligence work?"

Advanced Methods: Bayesian Statistics 

The block seminar, funded by the RFCS, took place in Golm, on February 19th - 23rd.

Instructor: Dr. Oliver Lindemann

Prof. Klaus Oberauer, University of Zurich, gave two presentations at the Department of Psychology on Wednesday, 17.01.2018.

Prof. Oberauer is one of the leading scientists in working memory research.

Paul Mätzig, from Project B02 of the CRC "Limits of Variability in Language", won the Allen Newell Best Student-Led Paper Award.

The Allen Newell Award – named in recognition of one of the founders of the field of cognitive modeling – is given for the best full ICCM (International Conference on Cognitive Modelling) paper with a student as first author for the paper “A computational investigation of sources of variability in sentence comprehension difficulty in aphasia” by Mätzig, P., Vasishth, S., Engelmann, F., & Caplan, C.

 

**********Application "GO:UP" of the University of Potsdam within the funding line "Innovative Hochschule" was successful.
