Self-Presentation for Women

Finding and Using Your Voice in Male-Dominated Research Environments

Trainerin: Dr. Juliane Handschuh

Content and goals
Large parts of the academic research landscape are still shaped by a communication culture that developed in predominantly male contexts — with its own implicit rules around status, visibility, and how to take up space. Women and people perceived as female in these environments often face a choice that shouldn't have to be a choice: adapt, or risk being overlooked.
This workshop rejects that framing. The goal is not to learn how to fit into a male communication culture, but to understand how it works — and from that understanding, to develop a communication style that is both authentic and effective. Participants will explore what gets in the way of showing up fully, work on their own voice and presence, and practice concrete strategies for navigating the specific challenges of research environments.

In this workshop, the participants will learn and practice:

  • How male-dominated communication cultures work: vertical vs. horizontal communication, communicative high and low status, power and dominance gestures
  • The inner team (Schulz von Thun): understanding the internal voices that shape how we communicate in challenging situations — and building inner coherence as a foundation for authentic expression
  • Self-presentation and visibility: how to make yourself seen and heard in ways that feel genuine
  • Performative speaking: presence, voice, and how to take up space
  • Quick-wittedness: how to respond to interruptions, dismissals, and inappropriate comments
  • Case work: bringing in real situations from your own work context and developing strategies together with the group.
