Interactions among intracellular signaling pathways

In various animal cells, external stimuli activate the InsP3/Ca2+ and cAMP signaling pathways in parallel. These pathways may interact in complex, reciprocal modes that are still elusive. In salivary glands of the blowfly Calliphora vicina, the hormone serotonin (5-HT) binds to two subtypes of 5-HT receptors, Cv5-HT2 und Cv5-HT7. 5-HT thus leads to rise in the cytosolic concentrations of cAMP and Ca2+, with at least the latter occurring in a complex spatiotemporal pattern. We analyze in vivo the various crosstalk mechanisms between both signaling pathways, and the physiological impact of these crosstalk mechanisms.
