Experimental Mineralogy-Petrology

Learning goals of the course ‘Experimental Mineralogy-Petrology’ module are:

  • to understand magmatic and metamorphic processes in nature by simulating those processes in the lab using high-pressure and temperature apparatuses
  • to gain hands-on experience in conducting high-pressure/high-temperature experiments on minerals, glasses and rocks and analysing the experimental products by different analytical methods

In this course 'Experimental Mineralogy-Petrology' you will:

  • conduct experiments under high pressure and temperature (hands – on in the lab)
  • examine the resulting material with various analytical methods
  • prepare a short presentation and report

The choice of high-pressure and temperature apparatuses and analytical methods depends on the topic.Different experimental set-ups are available: https://www.uni-potsdam.de/de/geo/forschung/mineralogie/ausstattung/ht-hp-labore

At the beginning of the semester there is a meeting with an introduction to the possible topics for experiments and organisation. During this meeting the students will select their topic / experimental project. Please check the course description and announcements in PULS for details on the exact date and time.
