Changing Your Program of Study or Part of a Program

Bachelor’s degree programs (no admission restrictions – no NC)

1. Step: Please check whether courses or exams that you have already completed might count towards your new degree program. The recognition of previous achievements must be processed by the relevant examination board or by the Academic Office (Studienbüro) of the Faculty of Law. Please use the Application for Recognition of Previous Academic Work and Exams (Antrag auf Anerkennung). During the recognition process you might also be placed into an advanced semester (Fachsemester) of study, if applicable.

2. Step: Please file an Application for Transfer to a Different Degree Program (Antrag auf Wechsel des Studiengangs) with the Office of Student Affairs during the re-registration period.

3. Step: Once all your documents are complete and present in the Office of Student Affairs, your transfer will be implemented. However, this can only be done if your semester fees have been received by the university. You may only transfer into an advanced stage (Fachsemester) in your degree program if courses are being offered that semester. You can find this information in the Course Catalog (PDF). If your number of semesters in a degree program exceeds the standard period of study, the examination board of your prospective program/s will decide about recognition and placement on a case-by-case basis.

Please note that some subjects require proof of successfully completed entrance examinations.

Master’s degree programs (except teaching degrees)

Process

Step 1: Please check whether any previously earned credits or examination results can be recognized and count towards your new degree program. To request recognition, you must contact the responsible examination board or the academic office of the Law Faculty. Please use the Application for Placement for this. During the recognition process it will also be determined whether you qualify for placement in an advanced semester of study and whether you meet all requirements for admission into the new Master’s degree program.

Step 2: Please file an application (no form) directly with the responsible examination board of the advanced semester of study within the application period. If you did not receive placement into an advanced semester of study, you must apply for the first semester of study. Applications for a first semester of study in a degree program are processed by uni-assist e.V. (please note exceptions!). If this is the case for you, please check in the current list of available programs of study (PDF), whether applications for a first semester of study are accepted for your desired semester. Please also contact the Office of Student Affairs within the re-registration period to file an Application for Transfer to a Different Degree Program.

Step 3: Once the admission notification as well as your acceptance of this admission have been received by the Office of Student Affairs, your transfer will be put into effect. The transfer is contingent upon receipt of your semester fees. If your number of semesters in a degree program exceeds the standard period of study, the examination board of your new Master’s degree program will decide about recognition and placement on a case-by-case basis.

Important Advice

Please keep in mind the processing times required by the examination board!
Applications for recognition of previous course work or examination results and placement into an advanced semester of study in the degree program should be filed at least 6 weeks prior to the end of the application period. An individual consultation with the adviser is recommended. This would for example ensure that a change in degree program does not result in significant disadvantages (e.g., extension of the time to degree).

Attention BAföG (student aid) recipients!
You must notify the BAföG office of your transfer and submit a written explanation of the change. Under certain circumstances, transferring into a different degree program may adversely affect your BAföG funding. You should inform yourself before you submit an application!

International students (non-EU citizens) should contact the International Office in person to find out whether additional materials are required for the prospective change of their degree program.
