Universidade Federal do Paraná

Universidade Federal do Paraná

The research and academic training project “Archivpelagos Literatur: deutschbrasilianische Inselwelten der Forschung” [Archi-ve-pelago Literature: German-Brazilian Island-Worlds of Research] was given a substantial grant by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (Program PROBRAL, Foundation CAPES) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Starting Januar 2015, PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers from the Universität Potsdam will jointly work with Brazilian colleagues from the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) on literary works, authors and intellectual discourses, which have shaped processes of cultural transfer and tranformation between Brazilian and German-speaking individuals and communities since the 19th century. This volume takes the view that globalization is not a recent phenomenon, but instead an enduring process, marked by four periods of accelerated change. The Early Modern Period in European historiography is linked to our present experience of globalization by way of the diverse global trends that took place during the Age of Modernity. The literatures of the world provide a visceral understanding of that which can only be understood from the perspectives offered by multiple logics – namely, the life of our planet and its inhabitants. The wisdom of literature cannot be replaced by any other kind of knowledge: it is life’s wisdom about life. Continue reading

Research Statement

We will make “Arab-American” literatures the subject of study in all their diversity. Since these literatures have been undergoing significant changes, the work methods, readings and interpretative approaches developed over the years cannot be taken as fixed constants and applied without further questioning. Categories such as “national-” or “world literature” are only effective to a limited degree and in specific contexts. Our goal is to search for adequate intellectual categories, the “in between” and the crossovers of national and world literature. The workshop “ArabAmericas” will seek alternatives amidst transregionally constituted cultures. Continue reading
