01/30-01/31/2014, International Conference: “América Latina y la Literatura Mundial” [Latin America and World Literature], Köln

The 2-day international conference focuses on “mercado editorial, redes globales y la invención de un continente” [economics of publishing, global networks and the invention of a continent] and is part of the Research Project “Constructions of World Literature and the Politics of Publishing”.

The conference is hosted by the Romance Department at the Universität zu Köln and the Department of Hispanic Philology at the Universitat de Barcelona. It is organized by Gesine Müller (Universität zu Köln) and Dunia Gras (Universitat de Barcelona) with support of the Global South Study Center Cologne (GSSC) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

The 3-day event is the fifth research encounter in a series of “Forschungstreffen Suhrkamp/Insel”, hosted by the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach. The combined conference and young researcher’s workshop is organized by the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach and Gesine Müller (Universität Potsdam) with support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and further funding by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA).

The conference title “Publisher Power World Literature” aims to tackle several questions:

How come that some literary works turn successful and become part of the canon of world literature? What is the role of publishing strategies, translation processes, and the international book market in pushing authors and their works? Focusing on the literary networks between Germany and Latin America, both scholars and central participants of the literary field explore literary production from a transnational perspective. The International Symposium “Trans*Chile” was held in the context of celebrating the research partnership between the Humanities of Universität Potsdam (Germany) and Universidad de Chile (Chile).

Trans*Chile was sponsored by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung für Wissenschaft, the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung, and the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).
