On the Diversity of Action Explanations

In the theorizing on action explanations, different proposals have been made on how children and adults explain people’s actions. Drawing on research from developmental psychology, social psychology, and philosophy of psychology, I critically discuss four common proposals. I argue that while each of them is partly right, all of them are incomplete, and overlook the diversity of action explanations. The point is particularly relevant for developmental psychological research, as children’s action explanations are even less explored than adults’. Moreover, some of the hitherto neglected action explanations play a significant constructive role in adult-child interactions, molding children's behaviour and traits.
