The German Research Foundation (DFG) has funded the research training group "Wicked Problems, Contested Administrations" (WIPCAD) on the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences since October 2012. The group occupies a unique position in Germany’s research landscape. WIPCAD combines an innovative, demanding approach to research with interdisciplinary excellence in policy and administration analysis, thereby contributing to the Faculty’s top position in the field of educating administrative researchers.
The complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity of current policy challenges – such as climate change or social state reforms – are changing the organization of public administration in a profound way. The Group’s research focuses on an investigation of the connections between these kinds of intricate policy problems and the development of administrative organizations at different political levels. The Group’s research interests focus on the empirical puzzle of different organizational responses to the pressing policy problems facing public administrators. The program is based on systematic interdisciplinary cooperation between the political and administrative sciences, sociology, and public management.
The PhD research group’s profile makes it the perfect place to educate young academics for cutting-edge international research.
