Background:

The project is motivated by the increasing consolidation of the core market for IoT platforms, where users and providers are increasingly turning their attention to new, complementary topics in the context of IoT platforms, especially for augmented reality. In this context, augmented reality in the industrial environment enables the realization of innovative processes and methods for improving manufacturing, maintenance and testing processes. Driven by these developments, new IoT platforms are emerging that provide industry-specific applications. However, unconsidered by all providers so far is the poor network coverage, i.e. dynamic AR applications can only be used with network connectivity so far.

Research objective:

The project goal is to develop a low-cost, modular, and mobile IoT gateway that enables workers to use industrial augmented reality (AR) applications anywhere (even without universal network coverage). To this end, requirements for the physical IoT gateway to be developed, the interfaces for bidirectional communication between the gateway and mobile devices or the cloud, and the connecting management system will be identified and implemented. The resulting solution will be validated in two stages (test environment and real application).
