Guidelines for on-site operations with stricter hygiene requirements

The following principles apply for the university’s return to on-site operations with stricter hygiene requirements:

Regardless of the activity, all workstations are subject to the specified and established fundamental principles, in particular those of the RKI, the occupational health and safety standards and the specifications of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health BAUA. The following guidelines merely supplement the legal requirements.

For regular office workstations, this means:

  • The area requirements of 8 m² mentioned in the Technical Rules for Workplaces ASR 1.2 for the first person should also apply to each additional employee in a room.
  • This means that a room of 12 m² is only permissible for one person.
  • Preferably, only individual workstations should be created and/or used.
  • If the minimum distance requirements are observed, 2 people can stay in an office room for longer periods of time, keeping a distance of > 1.50m, ideally >2m.
  • Monitors should be placed so that they have the effect of a sneeze guard.
  • With moderate outside temperatures, rooms must be kept well ventilated at all times, but at least 4 x 10 minutes daily.
  • Employees with a high volume of mail should wash their hands regularly.
  • For risk groups or parents of school-age children, we recommend working from home.
  • All those who feel ill should stay at home after consulting their supervisors.
  • Chairs have to be removed from the hallways (waiting areas) in order to avoid crowds.

The above-mentioned measures also apply to laboratory rooms to the same extent. There are some particularities for laboratories, however:

  • Laboratories are usually equipped with an eight-fold air exchange technology.
  • There should also be a maximum of two people working in each laboratory.
  • Fume hoods that are located next to or opposite each other may only be used by one person.
  • Doors between laboratories should be left open in order to alert others of any dangers or help.
  • Fume hoods should not be closed all the way. 5 cm above their final position, but under no circumstances above chest height. This ensures that the exhaust volume will not be reduced when the fume hood sash is closed. In addition to the regular removal of chemical vapors, the laminar air flow ensures a permanent removal of virus-contaminated aerosols. The capacity of the on-site exhaust air installation should be high enough for this since we will not be using all of the fume hoods. This will have to be discussed with the occupational safety specialist on a case-by-case basis, however, to determine which measures do not lead to an increased risk from chemicals.

Laboratories for practical courses:

  • Experiments are to be adapted to the current situation when it comes to difficulty and duration. You should chose experiments that can be conducted with a distance of 1.50m between students and instructors. Dangerous experiments (Gridnard, Butyllithium, Sodium) should not be conducted for this reason. If this is not feasible and “over the shoulder” supervision is absolutely necessary, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) has to be used. 
  • It is possible to offer a controlled disinfection of the hands in the morning, once a day, in the laboratories. However, hygienic hand washing is a priority.
  • In general, laboratories with a fixed minimum number of users may not be operated. The usual groups of two are not possible.
  • Every laboratory must be assessed individually under “corona conditions”.

Lecture halls:

  • Only lecture halls that have been assessed by the Occupational Safety Division under “corona conditions” may be used. The maximum number of users may not be exceeded and changes to the specified furnishings may only be made after approval has been granted for a request in that regard.
  • Students are requested to wear their own face masks when entering or leaving the above-mentioned rooms. It is not necessary to wear the face mask during the course.
  • Students are to be informed about the hygiene requirements for every on-site course. It is the responsibility of the teaching staff to ensure that the requirements are met.

Sports and massage facilities, university outpatient clinic and other physical activities:

  • If minimum distances cannot be observed for safety reasons or as a result of services to people, specific hygiene concepts must be drawn up for each individual case. The Occupational Safety Division can supply you with templates.
