University transfers

1. You are already studying at the University of Potsdam and would like to transfer to another university

If you have applied to another university but are still waiting on admission, you do not need to pay the semester fee for re-registration yet.

As soon as you receive word from your new university - for the summer semester, the beginning of March at the latest, and for the winter semester, the end of August at the latest - please contact the Office of Student Affairs

  • Please inform them whether you would like to continue at the University of Potsdam. You will then receive information on the fees to be paid for re-registration (for re-registration after the deadline, in addition to administrative fees for late re-registration in the amount of €10.23) or
  • If you wish to withdraw from the University of Potsdam, you must submit an application for exmatriculation.

If you are transferring to another university, it is recommended that you exmatriculate at the end of the semester (March 31/Sept. 30) to ensure that your student status is not interrupted, since your enrollment at the new university will not take effect until the new semester. In such cases, you can ask your new university when its new semester begins. The certificate of exmatriculation required for you to enroll at your new university will be submitted or sent to you in advance.

Important Information:

  • Please allow time for processing by the Examination Board
Please allow at least six weeks processing time for applications for the transfer of study and examination credits and semester placement. Prior consultation with the departmental advisory office is recommended in order to ensure, among other things, that there are no significant disadvantages to transferring to another university (e.g., extra time needed to complete your studies).
  • Note for recipients of German financial aid (BAföG):
The transfer to another university must also be communicated to the BAföG office and justified in writing. In certain circumstances, transferring to a different department may negatively affect BAföG funding. Information on such outcomes should be requested in advance.
