Transferring from/to another University

1. You are already a student at the University of Potsdam

and you have applied at another university, but you are still waiting for your admission notification; in this case you can hold off on paying your semester fees for re-registration.

As soon as you have received notification from your new university, but no later than the beginning of March (for the summer semester) or the end of August (for the winter semester) you must contact the Office of Student Affairs immediately and notify them

  • whether you wish to stay enrolled at the University of Potsdam. If so, you will receive information on the outstanding re-registration fees (Plus an additional €10.23 when re-registering after the re-registration deadline has passed.) or
  • whether you would like to deregister (exmatriculate) from the University of Potsdam. In this case you must request deregistration.

Due to a change in university, de-registration is recommended at the end of the semester (March 31/September 30) so that your status as a student is not interrupted. This is because the new university will first enroll you effective in the new semester. If necessary, ask your new university when the semester begins. You will receive the de-registration certificate that you will need to enroll at your new new university in advance.

2. You are a student at a different university and would like to continue in the same program at the University of Potsdam?

Important Advice:

  • Please keep in mind the processing times required by the examination board!
Applications for recognition of previous course work or examination results should be filed at least 6 weeks prior to the end of the application period. An individual consultation with an academic adviser is recommended. This would for example ensure that a change of degree program does not result in significant disadvantages (e.g., extension of the time to degree).
  • Attention BAföG (student aid) recipients: You must notify the BAföG office of your transfer and submit a written explanation of the change. Under certain circumstances, transferring into a different program of study may adversely affect your BAföG funding. You should inform yourself before you submit an application!
