“Giving your manuscript teeth: what journal editors like and how to highlight it”

Abstract:

Editors and reviewers are not simply looking for technically correct science; they are looking for manuscripts that make a clear and compelling contribution to scientific conversations. This session introduces a practical framework for identifying and communicating scientific novelty. Participants will learn how to sharpen the central claim of a manuscript so that its significance becomes visible to readers. The goal is to help researchers give their manuscripts “teeth”: a clear reason why the work matters and why it deserves attention.

About William Teale:

William has been a Scientific Editor at The EMBO Journal since 2021. He started his scientific career with a PhD at Bristol University before tackling research projects in Cambridge, UK and Freiburg, Germany. After these post-docs, William stayed at Freibrg University where he habilitated, whilst working on cell polarity in plants. At The EMBO Journal, William primarily handles manuscripts on membrane trafficking, autophagy, plant biology and autophagy. William is also an EMBO trainer, taking courses on Research Integrity, Communicating Science and Structuring your Manuscript.
