Prerequisite for the doctorate at the Faculty of Science is a German university degree in the form of a diploma, a Master's degree, a Magister degree with the main subject and the final thesis in the chosen scientific discipline or a certificate of the 1st state examination for the teaching profession at grammar schools (secondary level I and II) for a subject of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences that can be assigned to the scientific discipline in which the doctorate is sought. As a rule, the German university degree should have been awarded at least the grade "Good". Foreign qualifications should be at least equivalent to this grade.

For degrees not acquired in Germany, clarify the recognition of your degree with your main supervisor. The anabin database of the KMK and the conversion tables of the International Office are available for this purpose. For a conversion you can also use the grade converter of the HU Berlin, which is based on the modified Bavarian formula. If necessary, you can also prove the recognition by documents of the settings or the examination e.g. of the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).

You wish to register your intent to undertake doctoral studies?

  1. Please complete the Agreement for supervision of a doctoral thesis together with your principal supervisor. There you will also find the list of approved scientific disciplines, specified according to institutes and the associated teaching units.
  2. Candidates with foreign qualifications must check the equivalence of their qualifications with the principal supervisor. As a support, the database anabin of the KMK and the tables for conversion of grades of the International Office are  available. The Grade Convertion System (in German, Notenumrechnungssystem - NUS) of HU Berlin is also a helpful tool for converting international acquired grades into German grades.
  3. Discuss the entrance requirements with the responsible person of the chosen teaching unit in the Doctoral Committee and have your supervision agreement co-signed. If necessary, there may be further questions that need to be clarified during the co-signing process.
  4. Then return the Agreement of Supervision together with the copies of the certificates and a CV to the Office of the Doctorial Commitee (in person with an appointment or by letterbox/mail).

The regulations of the Agreement for supervision can be found on page 3 of the Agreement and in the Regulations for awarding the title „doctor rerum naturalium“ (Dr. rer. nat.) and Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing) at the Faculty of Science at the University of Potsdam in § 5.

Please note the deadline for the next meeting of the Doctoral Commitee.

You must submit the following documents at the doctoral office

  1. Agreement for supervision of a doctoral thesis with original signature of subject representative
  2. Copies of degree certificates and proof of the equivalence of your degree
  3. Signed CV

When the Doctoral Commitee has approved the declaration of intent you will receive a letter of acknowledgement.

Please note the following when submitting the documents digitally:

Please send the requested documents in ONE e-mail to prommnf@uni-potsdam.de.

  1. CV
  2. Scan of the Bachelor's and Master's degree certificate
  3. !Attention with the supervision agreement! Digital signatures of the doctoral candidate and the supervisory team are accepted for the supervision agreement. However, the original signature of the subject representative of the doctoral committee is required. In exceptional cases this signature can be obtained from the doctoral office. This form must be submitted to the doctoral office (by post or in person).

If the documents are incomplete and the deadline has not been met, admission to the doctoral programme will be postponed to the next month. You can only enrol as a doctoral student after you have been admitted. You can find the relevant deadlines here.

What happens after the submission of the documents?

If the documents were submitted before the deadline, your application will be voted on at the next meeting of the doctoral committee.

After approval by the doctoral committee, you will receive a confirmation of admission ("Intent to Pursue a Doctoral Degree") from us by mail.
