The IBZ Potsdam, opened in 1999, was constructed under the aegis of the Alexander-von-Humboldt foundation with both federal and Länder funds. Co-administered by the University and the Technical University of Potsdam, it has since then provided international guest researchers at all academic institutions in Potsdam with a home away from home. Upholding the founding concept of the IBZs in Germany, it thus contributes to the internationalization of local research sites, fostering not only academic, but also social and cultural networks.
The IBZ Potsdam is supported by the registered association "Internationales Begegnungszentrum der Wissenschaften Potsdam e.V." The association aims at building and maintaining international academic and cultural exchange. It includes the following members:
University of Potsdam
Technical University Potsdam
Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf
Helmholtz-Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences
Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research
Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)
Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP)
Moses Mendelssohn Center for European-Jewish Studies
Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der Fachhochschule Potsdam e.V.
In 2010, all IBZ in Germany merged into a loose association called Verbund der IBZ und hochschulnahen Gästehäuser. Its members cooperate in order to strengthen the IBZ image and to promote their services both in Germany and internationally. In addition, consultation within the network serves to design and uphold common standards. The autonomy and individuality of each IBZ is maintained.
The IBZ Potsdam provides guest researchers and their families with accommodation for stays ranging from six months to two years. It features 16 completely furnished and equipped apartments in a size from one to four rooms. The communal area includes a seminar room, a reading room, a communal kitchen and a large garden and playground, contributing to a friendly neighborly atmosphere. The IBZ Potsdam is well connected to public transit; shopping facilities are in walking distance.
