My work is focused on Middle-Late Pleistocene fauna. Given the highly degraded nature of these samples, I am using different ancient DNA approaches to isolate DNA for further genetic analyses.
I started my research on cave bears. I am interested in investigating the mito-genome phylogeny of different extinct species across Europe.
Currently I am collaborating with the Reiss Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim in a project which aims to investigate the ecology and evolutionary history of Pleistocene faunal remains recovered from the Rhine Valley. The fossil collection includes a wide range of extinct species that I am going to process using a new sampling strategy we recently developed. The genetic information obtained from the reconstructed paleogenomes, combined with the ecological data, will contribute to our understanding of the dynamics that brought these species to extinction.
