Professional Sports

Achieving top sporting performance requires an immense investment of time. Competitive sport is also pursued during a stage of life in which the foundations for a future professional career are laid. It is undeniable that difficulties arise when combining studies with elite sport, stemming from the demanding academic and sporting requirements respectively.

To help student elite athletes manage the balancing act between their studies and elite sport, the adh (General German University Sports Association) launched the ‘Partner University for Elite Sport’ project in 1999 in collaboration with various partners.

Under these cooperation agreements, a networked system is currently in place at around 90 adh member universities to compensate for specific disadvantages faced by approximately 1,200 student elite athletes. The cooperation partners enable students to successfully complete their academic studies despite the heavy time demands of elite sport.

In 2006, the University of Potsdam, the Potsdam Student Services Organisation, the Brandenburg State Sports Federation, the Brandenburg Olympic Sports Centre (OSP Brandenburg) and the General German University Sports Association signed this agreement to support student elite athletes at the University of Potsdam.

The annual Sports Reception is held in honour of our top student athletes and our participants in national and international student championships.
