University of Potsdam Successful Again in the THE Ranking of Young Universities

After an outstanding result in the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings for 2018, Brandenburg’s largest academic institution has now taken a top spot at position 24 in the THE’s U 50 ranking for universities under 50 years of age. The University of Potsdam is in the top 25 universities among 350 ranked institutions from 60 countries. In Germany, the University of Potsdam came in at fourth place behind the universities of Duisburg-Essen, Passau and Bielefeld. In global comparison, the University of Potsdam is at approximately the same level as the University of Antwerp and the University of South Australia.

“I am very pleased that we were again able to achieve such an excellent placement among the young universities,” commented the President of the University of Potsdam. “Twenty-fourth place worldwide shows that we are very competitive internationally and offer the best conditions for students and researchers from all over the world,” says Prof. Oliver Günther, Ph.D. Like the international rankings, the THE rankings for young universities focus on five criteria: teaching, research, citations, knowledge transfer and international reputation. However, the ranking of the “young” universities attaches less importance to the reputation factor, in which long-established scientific institutions profit from their sometimes centuries-old tradition.

The THE rankings, along with the Academic World University Ranking (AWUR) and the QS World University Ranking, are among the most important university rankings worldwide. Since 2012, THE has also published the "Young University Ranking" in order to adequately reflect the mission and performance of the young up-and-coming universities in an international comparison. The University of Potsdam has been actively participating in the THE rankings since 2017 and has also been extremely successful among the young universities since this year, which underscores the attractiveness of the Potsdam Alma Mater in the international arena.
