Word Order Variation and Change

Diachronic Insights into Germanic Diversity

The summer school will take place from July 7th to July 9th 2016 in the unique historical setting of the University of Potsdam. The main aim is to bring together junior and senior researchers in the field of word order variation and change in Germanic languages. We therefore developed a summer school structure that allows customized feedback on the individual research of the participating junior researchers.

The overall topic is subdivided into thematic sessions and a poster session:

  • negation phrases
  • pro-drop phenomena
  • information structure
  • verb second
  • clause linkage

An additional session will be open for topics that fit in several or none of the other sessions. Each session will be chaired by a senior researcher and will include presentations from two junior researchers. The number of junior researchers will be limited to 20.

Junior researchers (Phd students or Post-Docs) working in one of the above-mentioned fields are therefore invited to submit an abstract for a 20-minute-presentation and a letter of motivation explaining why they want to participate in the summer school and what their expectations are.

The summer school will start with a workshop-session. Participants can choose between a workshop on statistics or on digital tools in historical linguistics. Please note that - except for the workshop session - there are no parallel sessions and each participant will be present in every session.

The senior researchers in 2016 will include the following:

Theresa Biberauer (University of Cambridge)

Marco Coniglio (Universität Göttingen)

Jan Terje Faarlund (University of Oslo)

Guido Mensching (Universität Göttingen)

Jacob Hoeksema (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen)

Bettelou Los (University of Edinburgh)

Christine Salvesen (University of Oslo)
