“Democratic Competition: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”

Ian Shapiro discusses the varieties of political competition across the demo-cratic world. He shows why efforts to reform political parties over the past several decades to make them more democratic have backfired, compound-ing voter alienation, undermining good governance, and empowering dema-gogues and other populists. He also explains what needs to be done to re-verse the trend. This talk draws from his new book with Frances Rosen-bluth: Responsible Parties: Saving Democracy from Itself (Yale University Press, 2018).

Thursday, 22 November 2018, 10:15 a.m.
Campus August-Bebel-Str. 89 House 6, Lecture Hall H02

The lecture is followed by a discussion, both in English. The event is co-chaired by Professor Detlef Sprinz.
