 Research Interests

Negatively charged carbohydrates are a common structure on pathogenic bacteria, protecting them from desiccation and help them to bind water and nutrients. In bacterial infections biofilms, which are large communities encased in an extracellular polymeric substances, present an effective physical barrier against antibiotics and help bacteria to evade the human immune system leading to chronic diseases with poor patient prognosis. Nevertheless some bacteriophages are still able to cleave the carbohydrate structures using their Tailspike proteins to overcome the biofilm barrier.

I am interested in the kinetics and thermodynamics of binding of Tailspike proteins to negatively charged surface glycans. For the understanding I use spectroscopic techniques like fluorescence spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance as well as other colorimetric and chromatographic methods.
