Metaphorologie der Tropen [Metaphorology of the tropics], A transareal symposium on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Robert Müller’s Novel “Tropen: Der Mythos der Reise (1915)”

A conference of “PROBRAL Archivpelagos Literatur: deutschbrasilianische Inselwelten der Forschung” (CAPES/DAAD/Universität Potsdam/Universidade Federal do Paraná).

Friday, 29th January 2016, 10:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Universität Potsdam, Campus am Neuen Palais, Haus 8, Foyer

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the novel “Tropen: Der Mythos der Reise (1915)”, the symposium is dedicated to the work of Austrian expressionist and activist Robert Müller (1887-1924), who contributed in a unique way to the literary processing of globalization by means of his studies on the Americas. Within the research project “Archi(v)Pelagos Literatur: deutschbrasilianische Inselwelten der Forschung”, bilaterally supported by the Brazilian Foundation CAPES and the German DAAD, the aim of the conference is to concretize the dialogue between Romance Philology (Romanistik) and German Philology (Germanistik) in Brazil and Germany by discussing the “Metaphorology of the tropics” as it can be received in Müller’s novel, as well as by updating and expanding this concept within the context of contemporary works and theories.

11/06/2015 Symposium: “Humboldt’sche Wissenschaft im Spannungsfeld zwischen Polen, Brasilien und Deutschland. Ein transareales Symposion [Humboldtian Science between Poland, Brazil and Germany. A transareal Symposium]“, Potsdam.

The symposium is dedicated to Alexander von Humboldt, as well as to the contexts and conditions of Humboldtian science between Poland, Brazil and Germany. Humboldt’s writings are both, objects of cultural studies and model for transdisciplinary and transareally oriented sciences. Constellations of researchers who try to face this challenge do not only depend on the intercultural competence of individual scholars, but also on the intensive collaboration between different institutions exceeding bilateral exchanges. Persons, archives and universities, as places of research and teaching, have to be conceived by understanding their own specific relations of continuity and dynamics. Starting from Alexander von Humboldt’s oeuvre, productivity and opportunities of a trilateral cooperation will be discussed by means of the perspectives of Europe and Latin America. Therefore, the transareal symposium understands itself as a prelude for an intensified circulation of knowledge between Poland, Brazil and Germany in the future.

On the occasion of the colloquium “German-language Literature in Southern Brazil” Gerson Roberto Neumann (currently Alexander von Humboldt-Fellow at the University of Potsdam), Ottmar Ette (Chair for Romance Literature at the University of Potsdam), and Paulo Astor Soethe (Chair for German and German literature at the Federal University of Paraná in Curitiba)  will discuss status and tendencies of literature written in German language in the context of Southern Brazil. In addition, the speakers will present current projects and activities concerning various works, authors and intellectual discourses in the context of transatlantic processes of intellectual and literary interchange.
