“New Orleans and the Global South: Caribbean, Creolization, Carnival”, OLMS 2017.

The future of area studies lies in opening out into TransArea studies, which tie together area-connected competencies with transdisciplinary research practices. It is one of the loftiest and most urgent duties of philology to lift up this treasure in the awareness of the special relevance of literature, and to make it democratically available to the broadest possible sections of the population.

Ottmar Ette’s TransArea proceeds from the thesis that globalization is not a recent phenomenon, but rather, a process of long duration that may be divided into four main phases of accelerated globalization. These phases connect our present, across the world’s widely divergent modern eras, to the period of early modern history. Ette demonstrates how the literatures of the world make possible a tangible perception of that which constitutes Life, both of our planet and on our planet, which may only be understood through the application of multiple logics. There is no substitute for the knowledge of literature: it is the knowledge of life, from life. This English translation will be of great interest to English-speaking scholars in the fields of Global and Area Studies, Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, History, Political Science, and many more.

Editor’s Information:

This book proposes that there is no better, no more complex way to access a community, a society, an era and its cultures than through literature. For millennia, literature from a wide variety of geocultural areas has gathered knowledge about life, about survival, and about living together, without either falling into discursive or disciplinary specializations or functioning as a regulatory mechanism for cultural knowledge. Literature is able to offer its readers knowledge through direct participation in the form of step-by-step intellectual and affective experiences. Through this ability, it can reach and affect audiences across great spatial and temporal distances. Literature – what different times and cultures have been able to understand as such in a broad sense – has always been characterized by its transareal and transcultural origins and effects. It is the product of many logics, and it teaches us to think polylogically rather than monologically. Literature is an experiment in living, and living in a state of experimentation.

01/29/2016 Symposium: “Metaphorologie der Tropen: ein transareales Symposion [Metaphorology of the tropics: A transareal Symposium]“, Potsdam.

Metaphorologie der Tropen [Metaphorology of the tropics], A transareal symposium on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Robert Müller’s Novel “Tropen: Der Mythos der Reise (1915)”

A conference of “PROBRAL Archivpelagos Literatur: deutschbrasilianische Inselwelten der Forschung” (CAPES/DAAD/Universität Potsdam/Universidade Federal do Paraná).

Friday, 29th January 2016, 10:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Universität Potsdam, Campus am Neuen Palais, Haus 8, Foyer

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the novel “Tropen: Der Mythos der Reise (1915)”, the symposium is dedicated to the work of Austrian expressionist and activist Robert Müller (1887-1924), who contributed in a unique way to the literary processing of globalization by means of his studies on the Americas. Within the research project “Archi(v)Pelagos Literatur: deutschbrasilianische Inselwelten der Forschung”, bilaterally supported by the Brazilian Foundation CAPES and the German DAAD, the aim of the conference is to concretize the dialogue between Romance Philology (Romanistik) and German Philology (Germanistik) in Brazil and Germany by discussing the “Metaphorology of the tropics” as it can be received in Müller’s novel, as well as by updating and expanding this concept within the context of contemporary works and theories.

Editor’s information (in French):

Ein transareales Symposion [Humboldtian Science between Poland, Brazil and Germany. A transareal Symposium]“, Potsdam.

The symposium is dedicated to Alexander von Humboldt, as well as to the contexts and conditions of Humboldtian science between Poland, Brazil and Germany. Humboldt’s writings are both, objects of cultural studies and model for transdisciplinary and transareally oriented sciences. Constellations of researchers who try to face this challenge do not only depend on the intercultural competence of individual scholars, but also on the intensive collaboration between different institutions exceeding bilateral exchanges. Persons, archives and universities, as places of research and teaching, have to be conceived by understanding their own specific relations of continuity and dynamics. Starting from Alexander von Humboldt’s oeuvre, productivity and opportunities of a trilateral cooperation will be discussed by means of the perspectives of Europe and Latin America. Therefore, the transareal symposium understands itself as a prelude for an intensified circulation of knowledge between Poland, Brazil and Germany in the future.

Wednesday 24 June 2015, 2:00 PM.

Location: Universität Potsdam, Campus am Neuen Palais, Haus 9, Raum 102.

The Lecture will be presented in German language.

Content of the paper:

The World Expo 1904 was organized to commemorate the purchase of the Louisiana territory by Jefferson in 1803. Kaiser Wilhelm was keen to maintain good relations with the US, and vice versa, the United States were interested in the presence of a Central European Great Power. The emperor perceived himself as a patron of the arts and wanted to make sure that German painting would be well represented. The artists wanted to be represented by a many-sided “Art Parliament”. When Kaiser Wilhelm, who despised newer styles like Impressionism and Art Nouveau, found out about it, he dictated the terms: only the academic art with their images of a glorified Prussian or German history, with its landscapes or religious motives, should be sent to St. Louis. These resctrictions provoked some uproar in Germany and led to new secessions. The Imperial Commissioner at the World Exhibition, Theodor Lewald, had to place some favored images at the Palace of Art  (today St. Louis Art Museum), which were officially selected by Anton von Werner (court painter to the Emperor). However, Lewald succeeded to accommodate examples of modern trends in architecture, decoration and plastic in the exhibition building “Varied Industries”. The paper will show many of the exhibited paintings and works of art in order to emphasize the importance of the relationship between politics and art.

Gerson Neumann to lead new research project on “The German Literature in 19th Century Brazil. A Literature of no fixed Abode”

New research project: “The German Literature in 19th Century Brazil. A Literature of no fixed Abode.”

Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Gerson Roberto Neumann (Prof. of German Literature and Comparative Literature, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS – Brazil). The project is funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Gerson Roberto Neumann (Prof. of German Literature and Comparative Literatur, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS - Brazil).

Gerson Roberto Neumann (Prof. of German Literature and Comparative Literatur, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS – Brazil).

This project aims at discussing a literature which cannot be incorporated in any history of literature and deals with a literary production in German but written in Brazil. The theme of this literature is the relationship of German immigrants in Brazil and the quest for a new life in this context. This production is neither mentioned in Brazilian literature nor in German literature. It is, due to that reason, a literature without a place, in between two different contexts. Based on both Brazilian and German theories regarding this theme, and also on long discussions at congresses and other events, this issue will be discussed in depth here, aiming at bringing this literary production to a place where it can be seen and heard.

Abel, Johanna: Transatlantisches KörperDenken.
Reisende Autorinnen des 19. Jahrhunderts in der hispanophonen Karibik. Verlag Walter Frey 2015.

Alexander von Humboldt: A nomad and researcher in the focus of two projects

“Travelling Humboldt – Science on the Move” (AvH–R), based at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities; “Humboldt’s American Travel Diaries” (ART), based at the University of Potsdam and at the German State Library – Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation [Deutsche Version]

Studies on Alexander von Humboldt face new challenges and chances: Two projects are dedicated to the digitization, edition and research of those documents and texts that Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) wrote during his travels with the object of further investigation and documentation of his scientific understanding that is still unknown in many aspects.

Julius Schrader (1859): Baron Alexander von Humboldt (1769-–1859), Oil on canvas, 158.8 x 138.1 cm, New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Julius Schrader (1859): Baron Alexander von Humboldt (1769-–1859), Oil on canvas, 158.8 x 138.1 cm, New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Both projects pursue a transdisciplinary approach to one of the most prominent scientists, writers and philosophers of the nineteenth century. Their goal is to further unravel Humboldt’s understanding of nature and humankind as deeply intertwined with his experiences as a lifelong traveller.

While there still is much to learn about Alexander von Humboldt, there are also some aspects to disband: the separation of “Humboldt the scholar” versus “Humboldt the scientist” isn’t able to meet an approach that shows the inseparable linkage between nature and culture in Humboldt’s works; the historical fixation of Humboldt as last reminiscence of pre-modern science and his monumentalization as the “last polymath” can’t comply with his ways of practicing and linking the ever-expanding branches of modern sciences.

Based on the travel diaries, which in case of the Academy project include the diaries of Humboldt’s trip to the Americas (1799-1804) as well as those of his Russian Expedition (1829), both projects aim to show how movement and travel are clearly interdependent within Humboldt’s theory of knowledge and how his writing could show the possible path to a still up-to-date understanding and conceptualization of a dynamic idea of science.

This study, focusing on Latin American literature, discusses the motif of a variety of worlds as a key concept of the modern novel in terms of genre, culture, and fiction theory: the world of the modern novel is always already in contact with another one. This concept, developed against the backdrop of (literary) history, goes hand in hand with the theoretical assumption that modern novel forms have brought about a turn in genre theory. Differently from genuine poetics, genre theory is always also concerned with and contingent on a certain history/back story. Continue reading

On October 30, 2014, the Berlin-Brandenburgian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) announced the launch of its new long-term editorial research project “Alexander von Humboldt auf Reisen – Wissenschaft aus der Bewegung [Travelling Humboldt: Science on the Move]” (AvH-R).

The editorial project forms part of a current national and international research community that has recently been given new incentives by the high-profile acquisition of Alexander von Humboldt’s Travel Diaries by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) through means of public-private sponsorship.

With AvH-R, BBAW builds on its long tradition of in-house Alexander von Humboldt scholarship under the direction of Eberhard Knobloch (co-submitter for AvH-R). The project’s director will be Ottmar Ette, Professor of Romance and Comparative Literature at the Universität Potsdam.

Jahrhunderts. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz) will celebrate the purchase of Alexander von Humboldt’s American Travel Diaries in an Opening Ceremony on March 4, 2014. The Travel Diaries were acquired in 2013 as a central element of the rara collection of the Berlin State Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin). They are considered to represent the so called “second”, that is, the scientific discovery of the Americas. Humboldt’s Travel Diaries consist of approximately 4000 pages, densely annotated and filled with sketches and drawings by Humboldt. The purchase of the Travel Diaries was made possible by the generous support of several public and private sponsors.

The ceremony’s speakers will be: Hermann Parzinger (Presindet of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation), Continue reading

3-year Research Project at Universität Potsdam to follow the purchase of Alexander von Humboldt’s American Travel Diaries

Last wednesday, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz) announced in a press release the purchase of Alexander von Humboldt’s American Travel Diaries (for more information on the purchase and the German and international press reactions see avhumboldt.de).

Together with the purchase, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding a joint research programm by the Universität Potsdam and the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz. Starting in 2014, Prof. Dr. Ottmar Ette (Universität Potsdam) will lead a research group of at least five researchers (doc and postdoc level) to work on the material, cultural, and epistemological significance of Humboldt’s travel diaries, which can be considered the foundation of what Ottmar Ette has coined as Humboldtian Writing”.

At the same time, the project includes the complete digitization of both the volumes of Humboldt’s diaries as well as the entire literary estate, currently available in the archives of the Staatsbibliothek. Taken together, both initiatives will provide a new ground for current and future research on the history of European science in the 19th century in general and Alexander von Humboldt Studies in particular.

The purchase of the travel diaries was funded by a consortium of both public and private institutions. The nine leather-bound books will be presented to the public in an official ceremony early 2014.

About the book (in German)

Conference Homepage (German)

The workshop is part of a joint research project by the Universität Potsdam, Germany, and the Universidad de Costa Rica, Cost Rica, with financial support from the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft).

Introduction

This event is both a self-standing, international conference, and, at the same time, the second of two joint meetings by scholars from Germany, Costa Rica, and Honduras in order to further develop the combined research efforts. The first meeting took place in San José, Costa Rica, in late 2012.

The discussed project “Convivencia en la diferencia” seeks to analyze and better understand the intricate notion of conviviality in difference, most likely one of the most urgent issues of contemporary societies in Central America and the Caribbean in the 21st century. This is especially true as these (like all) societies are facing the challenges of a new phase of accelerated globalization, in which matters of peaceful conviviality in difference have come to a crucial point.

The conference aims at further developing an international research project that explores the cultural dimensions implied in the notion of conviviality. This will be done on three levels: theoretical framing, (trans)disciplinary methodology, and, finally, spatiotemporal specification of the phenomena to be studied.
