International Applicants: German Language Proficiency for a Degree Course of Study

If you want to study at the University of Potsdam, you must provide evidence of very good German language proficiency (there are exceptions for English-language programs and doctoral programs). This page will tell you which certificates are recognized by the University of Potsdam and where you could improve your German prior to beginning your studies, if necessary.

The University of Potsdam recognizes the following certificates of German language proficiency for admission.

  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) – normally at least DSH 2
  • Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF) with a minimum of 4 points in each category
  • Assessment test (FSP) by a German preparatory college (Studienkolleg)
  • A university entry examination (Abitur) acquired at a recognized German school abroad
  • Successfully completed final examination of a German-language degree course at a German university or polytechnic university (Fachhochschule)
  • The Goethe-Institute’s Goethe-Zertifikat C2: GDS, “Kleines deutsches Sprachdiplom,” “Großes deutsches Sprachdiplom,” or  “Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung”
  • Successfully passed telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule
  • Österreichisches Sprachdiplom (ÖSD Zertifikat C1)
  • Language certificate of the Education Ministers' Conference (Kultusministerkonferenz), DSD 2 with C1 in each category
  • If you have completed a degree in German studies at a recognized university abroad, you may be exempted from the DSH exam. Such a decision is made by the Center for Languages and Key Competences (Zessko) at the University of Potsdam.

What if you don't have any of the mentioned certificates?

You can take the DSH intensive language course to prepare for the DSH exam at the University of Potsdam or take the DSH exam right away.

Whether you have to attend the intensive language course or proceed directly to the DSH exam will depend on the kind of language certificate that you already hold.
