Dr. Stefanie Barbirz: Research Group Glycobiochemistry
Our research focus is on bacterial polysaccharides and their protein interaction partners. In fundamental research we are interested in structural thermodynamics of complex carbohydrate recognition by proteins. Our group analyzes protein-carbohydrate interactions with isothermal titration calorimetry, surface plasmon resonance and spectroscopic techniques. Viral adhesion proteins recognizing polysaccharides of Gram-negative bacteria serve as a model system, also with the aim to investigate bacteriophage infection mechanisms related to lipopolysaccharide protein interactions, to develop agents to control biofilm and for pathogen detection.
