Multilevel prosodic processing from a crosslinguistic perspective

The project studies the acquisition of prosodic features en early language acquisition  of German and French - two languages that show crucial differences in their prosodic systems. The research targets the question when language specific properties are established during development and how these language specific properties affect speech perception in adults. Monolingual and bilingual participants are tested with the same methods and materials at both project sites.

Involved parties: Universität Potsdam (Coordinator), CNRS - Université Paris Descartes, University Pompeu Fabra Barcelona, NIRx Medizintechnik GmbH Berlin, University of Jyväskylä, Central European University Budapest, Haskins Laboratories New Heaven USA and six further partners from medicin, education and technology.
This network studies early indictors for delays and impairments in the development of spoken and written language taking a crosslinguistic perspective and using the most recent neuro-cognitive experimental techniques. Besides broadening the understanding of the cognitive underpinnings of these disorders the project aims at the further development of experimental techniques suited for the assessment of very young children and of diagnostic tools for the early detection of children at risk.

This consortium offers a training- and research programme for PhD-students who are working on the cognitive basis of language processing and language acquititon and their disordners in children and adults. The students conduct their research at several of the involved institutions that provid common supervision. Network-wide scientific and professional skissl trining is offered during yearly summer or winter schools. Students obtain joint doctoral degree from the universities constituting the consortium.
