The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides funds to German universities to make this award available, and it places the responsibility for selecting awardees into the hands of the university. At the University of Potsdam, the DAAD Prize is the most important award for international students. For the awardees the Prize represents the recognition of their academic achievements by one of the most renowned German fellowship organizations.
Being a former recipient of a DAAD fellowship or Prize can facilitate the beginning of a professional career. Being part of the "DAAD ALUMNI community" also means having access to an international network that can be used for a variety of purposes. Those supported by the DAAD generally stay in touch with their universities, and they often return for their doctorate or as scholars.
The Prize can also show the broader public how international students are enriching our academic community. Within only a few years, the Prize has gained a remarkable reputation – a fact that is also reflected in the great interest that the media takes in the awardees.
The Prize honors students with outstanding academic achievements and a remarkable social – especially intercultural – engagement.
This Prize can be given to advanced Bachelor's students, Master's students, students in their main course of study (Hauptstudium) as well as those who have recently completed their final examinations or doctoral students. Nevertheless, the DAAD award is not a research prize, and it is not intended to honor work on a doctoral dissertation. For recent graduates, the final examinations should have been completed as a rule no more than 3 months prior to the award ceremony.
Professors, lecturers and students of the university may provide nominations.
The decision of the University Advisory Board for Internationalization is based on the submitted written proposals. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The Advisory Board for Internationalization makes the decision and wishes to emphasize that according to the application guidelines not only academic achievement will be considered, but also social/intercultural engagement.
