NEXUS: Earth Surface Dynamics

An interdisciplinary research initiative

NEXUS will connect research in the geological, biological, and climate disciplines with data sciences and complex network analysis. Research focus are the transient periods following rapid transitions triggered either by large-magnitude impulses or gradual forcing mechanisms leading to tipping points.

Dynamic equilibrium and transient periods: Coupling and feedback of the Earth's surface

In NEXUS, we will focus on the coupling and feedbacks of the Earth Surface and Ecological System in the terrestrial realm. The transient periods are key to understanding the rapidly changing environmental conditions of the past, present, and future.

Expanding the focus

In order to capture the full dynamic range of spatiotemporal scales of the Earth Surface and Ecological System, NEXUS will combine research on environmental and geological archives with the growing number environmental sensor data to quantify processes shaping the Earth's surface.
