Projektbeschreibung

Economists and economic expertise in times of crisis. On transnationalizing academic, professional and state practices

Christian Schmidt-Wellenburg’s research focuses on statements by experts on the current economic crisis and the form of expertise employed when producing these utterances. He is interested in the form of expertise employed, changes that have occurred over time, and the influence they have on the constitution of scientific, professional and state practices. He pursues his research interest in three interconnected projects. First, position takings by German economists on creating a European Banking Union in 2012 are investigated by reconstruction of the German field of economists. Second, national, European and international expert committees on the financial crisis are scrutinized as to their composition, their way of problematizing and the solutions they offer. Third, the role of judicial, economic and managerial experts and expertise in the process of European integration and state building is explored in a historical perspective. In all three projects, a field-analytic methodology is applied, utilising methods of geometric data analysis as well as methods of structural hermeneutics.
